This refers to the letter ‘Job security’ (February 9) by Abdul Samad Samo. I agree with the writer that sufficient time should be given to officials posted in a particular department to perform to the best of their ability and bring about suitable reforms before they are transferred. Officials should be expected to work in a particular department for at least three years. If a department requires any further services from a particular official, it should extend his/her tenure by another two years.
The practice should be strictly adhered to as it will discourage officials who are posted in various departments for prolonged durations and use their positions to serve their own vested interests from establishing their monopoly in that department. The authorities concerned should implement checks and balances in this respect.
