Despite poor governance, the Sindh chief minister has refused to step down, saying everything is normal in the province. Asif Ali Zardari has also ruled out the possibility of the chief minister resigning any time soon. During his recent visit, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali tried vainly to defend Qaim Ali Shah – which is intriguing.
It was perhaps in this perspective that the corps commander of Karachi chose to give a dressing-down when he spoke at length on the chronic situation in Sindh. According to the news report, ‘AG finds over Rs1 trillion irregularities in Sindh’ (May 20). This is a stark confirmation of massive corruption/embezzlement during 2014-2015 alone. Will the interior minister direct NAB/FIA to conduct an impartial investigation into the past seven years of the PPP government? Will the army chief take cognisance of the embezzlement of taxpayers’ money in the province? Will the Supreme Court take suo motu notice of the AG’s findings? Will the octogenarian chief minister show some grace by stepping down?
