A policeman was shot dead and another injured in an attack in the SITE area on Sunday morning.
SITE-B police said some men were steal electricity copper wires near Pakistan Cable Chowrangi, SITE when constables Adil Nawaz and Sadaqat reached the scene and tried to stop them. The thieves fired gunshots at the two policemen and escaped.
They were rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Nawaz, 35, succumbed to his injuries. The police said the constable had suffered bullet wounds to chest.
‘Robber’ killed
Late on Sunday night, a suspected robber was killed and a passerby injured during a mugging attempt involving an office-bearer of the Awami National Party.
The incident took place near Madina Masjid in Orangi Town No 4 when, according to police, Rauf Khan, the ANP’s District Central information secretary, was heading towards the Peerabad area for a party meeting.
Peerabad SDPO Abdul Ghaffar Lakho said two robbers tried to intercept Khan but he retaliated and, in the ensuing shootout, one of the robbers was injured as his accomplice fled.
The injured suspect was then severely beaten up by a mob of area residents and, though police intervened to take him to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, he died during treatment.
Police were yet to identify the suspect but disclosed that an unlicensed pistol has been seized.
Suspect held
The Special Investigation Unit arrested a suspected murderer in a raid in Korangi.
SIU SSP Mohammed Farooq Awan said Ali Raza alias Qambar was rounded up after a shootout.
The official added that suspect was wanted for robberies and murders including those of two policemen, constables Rahib and Sonal Jakharani.
