Green and dangerous
The higher authorities must pay attention to a critical issue: conocarpus plantation. According to environmental experts, this species of plants is harmful for Karachi’s environment. However, this conocarpus is planted in every nook and corner of the city – inside all parks and along roadsides. This plant is harmful because it roots destroy the underground infrastructure. It damages electric cables, water lines and telephone lines. It also poses serious hazards to public health, and causes asthma and skin allergies.
Experts fear that in the foreseeable future, conocarpus will start releasing pollen, which will cause pollen allergy. It is unfortunate that in our country, action is taken without carrying out proper research. The authorities concerned should take immediate action and cut down the trees that are injurious to both human health and the environment.
