Robin, Taimoor and Sajid share amateurs lead

KARACHI: The leading 112 golfers were in action when the 18th Sindh Amateur Golf Championship teed off at the Karachi Golf Club here on Friday.

The championship is being played over 54 holes in two major categories - amateurs and seniors - along with 36 holes for ladies and 18 holes for veterans.

In the amateurs category, Robin Bagh, along with defending champion Taimoor Khan of Peshawar and Sajid Khan of Arabian Sea Country Club played par rounds of 72. Followed closely at 73 were Ahmed Baig of Lahore Garrison, Mansoor Teli of Karachi Golf Club, Luca Guidi and Mohammad Sharif of West Wind Golf Club. Ahmed Baig, who recently won the Under-21 category of the Faldo Golf Series in Vietnam, was unlucky with his putting. DHA’s Zohaib Asif and Royal Palm’s Mohammad Rehman were tied at 2-over par at 74. At 75 was Peshawar’s Khushal Khan.

In the seniors category, Col. Mansoor Akram of DHA Golf Club was leading with a gross score of 75. He was followed by Capt. Azhar Iqbal (78), Sohail Rana (81) and Sattar Shah (82). Defending champion Asad I.A. Khan shot 83, while Naveed Ali posted 84 and Pervaiz Ansari 85. Omar Bangash, Capt. Tahir and Sajid Sharif were tied at 86.

The veterans teed off on Friday to play 9 holes in which Group Captain Aftab A. Khan was leading with a gross score of 43. He was followed by Lt. Col Shahid Mehboob (DHA) and Brig. Abdul Islam (KGC) at 45 respectively. Abdus Samad and Asghar Ali were both tied at 46. The veterans will play the remaining 9 holes on Saturday (today). The Sindh Golf Association is holding this championship for the 18th successive year.
