PHC closes down 32 fake treatment centres

LAHORE: The Punjab Healthcare Commission has closed down 32 fake treatment centres of quacks in different parts of the city during the last two days, and initiated further proceedings against them.

According to a press release, the PHC teams sealed 32 businesses of quacks, which comprised of 19 general quacks, nine fake dentists, three hakeems and one bone-setter. They were posing as general physicians. These treatment centres were: Umer Medical Store, Danish Medical Center, Khursheed Homeopathic clinic, Nadeem Medical Store and Clinic, Abu Bakar Shaheed Free Dispensary, Abdul Razzaq Shoaib Clinic, Bannu Hijama Centre, Al-Hijama Cupping Centre, Rashid Clinic, Markaz Physiotherapy, Aziz Clinic, Masha’Allah Hijama Centre, Abdul Qadir Free Dispensary, Shafi Memorial Hospital & Maternity Home, Al-Amal Welfare Dispensary, Abdullah Clinic, Ghulam Mustafa Clinic, Al-Noor Clinic, Arif Clinic and Ahmed Clinic. Nine fake dentists were Abid Dental Clinic, Ijaz Dandan Saz, Ahmed Dental Clinic, Arsalan Dental Clinic, Shad Dental Clinic, Yaqoob Dental Clinic, Aslam Dental Clinic and Mian Dental Clinic. The teams had also sealed businesses of Aza Band Haidery Shifa Khana, Al-Saudia Tibbi Foundation and Matab Al Khair, and a bone-setter Al-Shifa Hadi Jorr.

GCU: As per the decision of Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA) Punjab chapter, the Government College University’s Academic Staff Association (GCU-ASA) on Tuesday observed black day against amendments to the criteria of appointment of vice-chancellors in public sector universities.

According to a press release, the GCU’s faculty didn’t boycott the classes. However, they wore black ribbons on their shoulders to protest against lifting the condition of PhD for appointment of a vice-chancellor (VC).

Prof Dr Hamid Mukhtar, President GCU-ASA said universities were not profit making companies, a person having no teaching and research experience could not run a university effectively.

“The government must understand the role of VC in a university. In modern universities, research is an important factor which can be guided well only by a vice-chancellor who himself has been a researcher,” he added.

Prof Mukhtar said lack of autonomy was the key factor behind the underperformance of universities. He said teaching fraternity would never allow the appointments of managers and bureaucrats in universities as VC.

seminar: Punjab University’s Institute of Social and Cultural Studies (ISCS) on Tuesday organised a seminar on “Cancer Prevention through Healthy Lifestyle”.

Cancer Care & Research Centre Chairperson Prof Dr Rubeena Zakar, Prof Dr Shaharyar, faculty members and students were present on the occasion. Dr Rubeena talked about social factors leading to cancer. She said Pakistan was expecting double burden of disease having communicable and non-communicable disease and cancer were increasing at alarming rate here. She said we could only protect ourselves by adopting a healthy life style.

Dr Shaharyar talked about different types of cancer, their symptoms and preventive measures. He said cancer care hospital provided free of cost mammography service to breast cancer patients.
