Weirather seals Super-G World Cup title
ARE, Sweden: Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein secured the alpine skiing Super-G crystal globe on Thursday when she came sixth in the final event of the World Cup circuit in Sweden.
The season finale was won by Italy’s Olympic downhill champion Sofia Goggia who on Wednesday also sealed the downhill crystal globe despite finishing second to Lindsey Vonn.Goggia beat Germany’s Viktoria Rebensburg by 0.32sec and American star Vonn by 0.53sec in second and third respectively.
Bronze medallist at last month’s Winter Olympics Weirather was on Thursday a full 1.08sec adrift of the winner, but was ensured the discipline title when the only woman who could beat her on points the Swiss ace Lara Gut skied out.
Weirather ended the season with an 86-point advantage on Gut while Anna Veith was third some 122 points behind.Vonn will go into next season with 82 World Cup victories under her belt, just four short of the all time record held by Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark.
