‘Take action against timber mafia’
A symposium on "Forests on the Verge of Extinction" was organised on Saturday in collaboration with Eco Watch and the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).
The symposium was attended by a large number of lawyers, environmentalists, academicians, research scholars, students and others. Pir Kaleem Khursheed, President Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), called for a government crackdown against timber mafia and elements that encroach upon forest lands.
Sardar Asif Sial, an environmental law practitioner and certified global climate reality leader, pointed out that the decreasing forest cover in the country had resulted in erratic environmental phenomena. Dr Iftikhar Ahmed from Punjab University, highlighted the importance of water and forests. Dr Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhry, Ex-Director General (DG), Pakistan’s Meteorological Department, said that forestation was the best way to fight climate change.
