Symposium on small modular reactors held
Islamabad: The speakers of Second National Symposium on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) lauded the efforts of late Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad (N.I, H.I, S.I). while addressing the gathering Ambassador Ali Sarwar Naqvi, Executive Director, CISS said that Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad trained a generation of researchers with international training and he always represented Pakistan in befitting manner at international platforms. His death is a great loss of nation.
Arshad Muhammad Khan former Executive Director GCISC said that the absence of Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad at this event has saddens us. He was the most competent scientist of Pakistan. He played an important role in making Pakistan a nuclear power.
Pervaiz Butt, former chairman PAEC said that scarcity of resources and funds were never lessened the zeal and dedication of Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad. The credit of Pak-CERN collaborations goes to Dr. Ishfaq Ahmad. He was a great leader who has dedicated his life for the uplift of the country.
While talking about the importance of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), President Pakistan Nuclear Society Dr. Syed Javaid Khursid said that SMR is the latest technology and thought to be the game changer in the next decade to overcome the deficiencies of nuclear power generation while covering the economic burdens. The discussion to develop SMRs is picking up worldwide as it is getting difficult for developing countries to invest in the large reactors of over 300 MW.
Syed Ziauddin, Member engineering Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission also spoke about the benefits of SMRs. While talking about the objectives of PNS he said that PNS aims to disseminate knowledge about peaceful uses of nuclear technology to the non-nuclear scientists and to the general public and the benefits of nuclear technology. The Pakistan Nuclear Society targeted three topics of the utmost importance for the country. First is Nuclear Energy and Climate Change, Second is Nuclear Knowledge Management and third is Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology.
The seminar was concluded with the remarks from Dr. Ansar Pervez, former Chairman PAEC. More than 100 scientists and researchers have participated in this event from different R & D organizations of twin cities.
