LAHORE: The faculty and students of Government College University (GCU) organised a walk on campus here on Friday to express grief over the brutal murder of their Associate Professor Dr Tanzeem Akbar Cheema in the provincial metropolis.

The two sons, aged 7 and 12 years and other family members of the deceased also participated in the walk organised by the university’s Academic Staff Association (GCU-ASA) from the Postgraduate Block to Main Gate.

The students were holding placards inscribed with slogans including, “We have lost our encyclopedia” and “Justice for Dr Tanzeem.” “Whatever is the reason, but it could not justify the inhuman act of Dr Cheema's murder. In fact, no reason can justify a murder,” said GCU ASA Prof Dr Hamid Mukhtar while addressing the participants.

The ASA demanded that anybody involved in the murder be arrested and punished under the law. They also requested the media not to publish unconfirmed and non-conclusive reports, saying that such reports caused further agony among students and teachers of the university. Prof Hamid demanded that the law and order situation in the city be improved to protect the precious lives of teaching fraternity and other citizens.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah also participated in the walk and assured the sons of the slain professor that the university faculty and staff would pursue the murder case of their father at all the forums of justice. He told them, "Our doors are always open to them for all kinds of support and guidance. Never feel that your father is not here.”
