Responding to perennial complaints of industrialists and traders of the Korangi industrial area, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) began repair work on the Jam Sadiq Bridge on Friday.
Addressing media personnel while announcing the reconstruction of the bridge, KMC Administrator Saqib Ahmed Soomro claimed the construction work would be completed within three months; city wardens would be deployed to ensure smooth flow of traffic in areas surrounding the bridge. He said the project was initiated owing to increasing difficulties of people to to access the area.
According to Soomro the reconstruction was started after consulting experts and engineers as a major chunk of the city’s traffic passed through the industrial area. Funds for the project, costing around Rs155 million, were arranged by the government after the matter was brought up with the minister of local government Sharjeel Memon, he said.
The concerned department and officials were directed to complete the project at the earliest so as to add to the convenience of the citizens.
Soomro urged traffic wardens to play a diligent role while the bridge was under construction so as to prevent traffic jams. “Though the KMC had many a time carried out repair works at the bridge but the measures taken were temporary.”
The 24-feet wide bridge with a length of 1.20 kilometres was constructed in 1992 but had since been in a poor condition.
Korangi Association of Trade and Industry President Rashid Ahmed Siddiqui along with the association’s office bearers, trade union representatives, KMC Metropolitan Commissioner Masood Alam, Administrator Korangi Abdul Rashid, KMC Director General of technical services Niaz Ahmed Soomro, industrialist Zubair Chaya, Muhammad Naqi and other concerned officers were also present.
