KARACHI: The World Hockey XI demolished Pakistan junior team in the first exhibition match by 5-1 at Abdul Sattar Hockey Stadium on Friday as experience dominated the youth.
The Green Shirts played well in the first two quarters. They secured lead when forward Adil Lateef found a gap on the left side in the first quarter. Although during the first two quarters the World XI possessed the ball mostly, the Green-shirts did manage to make some shots at the goal.
And Pakistan defenders twice punctured good moves by the World XI forwards. Roderick Weusthof, the visiting team’s captain, turned the match around in the third quarter when he scored two goals in quick succession on penalty corners. The goalkeeper and other defenders proved helpless against his smart drag flicking. The World XI were leading 4-1 at the end of the third quarter.
The World XI forwards launched more attacks from the right wing and demolished the Pakistani defence. The World XI right wingers also played well and tormented the Pakistani defence, resulting in the three field goals.
The scorers were forwards Philip Meulenbroek, David Alegre and Grant Schubert. Pakistani goalkeeper Adil Rao had no answer. The World XI added one goal in the last quarter. The second match will be played in Lahore on February 21.
