The PPP once had a stronghold in the coastal areas of Karachi. However the party lost in the 2013 elections. This is because it did nothing for the welfare and betterment of people living in these areas. There are as many as 1,200 villages along the coastal belt stretching from Mubarak Village to Lath Basti. Each village has a population of between 2,000 and 10,000 people.
Although these villages are centuries old, the relevant authorities have yet to come up with a comprehensive plan that could provide the fisherman community with proper health, education, electricity, harbour and ownership rights. It is the responsibility of the authorities to look into the matter and take remedial measures to alleviate the suffering of the people living in the area.
