Youth dies in lockup

LAHORE: A 25-year-old youth died in Township police lockup under mysterious circumstances here on Wednesday.
The police removed the body to morgue for autopsy. Victim Yasir Butt’s family alleged that the police tortured him to death. Police are investigating the death. Wounded youth dies in hospital: A youth wounded in firing in Defence-B area four days ago succumbed to his injuries in hospital here on Wednesday.
Abdul Moeed, 22, of Township was on his way on a bike along with his friends when, near Lalak Chowk Ghazi Road, he was injured in firing by some unidentified people. He was rushed to hospital where he died.
CHALLANED: At least 35,472 vehicles have been challaned during the ongoing campaign against the underage drivers and the drivers without licence. About 15,220 motorcycles, 208 cars and 1,570 motorcycle-rickshaws have been impounded. Furthermore, 378 cases and 70 qalandras have been registered against the owners of motorcycle-rickshaws who hand over rickshaws to juvenile drivers on rent. Over 12,892 underage drivers have been set free after their written guarantee that they will not drive again. DIG Traffic Muhammad Farooq Mazhar has given details of the fifteen-day campaign. He said the main object of the campaign was to stop juvenile drivers from driving motorcycles and motorcycle-rickshaws. He said 250 cable programmes, 150 FM radio programmes and 225 press releases have been arranged for the awareness of citizens. In addition to it, 54 seminars, 63 rallies have been held. Over 2,000 lectures have been delivered to students and drivers.
