A captain of the ride-hailing service, Careem, and his customer were shot and injured by two robbers in a mugging in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on Friday night.

Gulshan-e-Iqbal Division SP Ghulam Murtaza Bhutto told The News that initial reports suggested that the incident took place somewhere near Hassan Square. He said both victims – identified as Careem captain Imran Rashid and his passenger, 60-year-old Sadruddin – were admitted to the Liaquat National Hospital (LNH).

Quoting eyewitnesses, SP Bhutto said two men on a motorcycle intercepted the car, a black Toyota Corolla bearing registration number ANJ-308, and demanded cash and mobile phones from the men inside.

“The witness said that the driver gave his mobile phone immediately but attempted to speed away when the armed men tried to take away cash from him,” said the cop, adding that the suspects then opened fire on the car.

SP Bhutto said initial reports suggest that Imran was shot in the neck and the bullet passed through and hit Sadruddin. He said that doctors had termed Imran’s condition critical.

Careem’s version

Speaking to The News, Careem’s Head of Public Affairs Sibtain Naqvi confirmed the vehicle and the driver were linked with the ride-hailing service. He said the captain and the customer had been injured in a mugging near Expo Centre. A Careem team was present at LNH to offer all possible assistance.

Naqvi said the company provides coverage to captains in case of injury on duty and assured that Careem would bear his treatment expenses.
