Brazil arrests ex-politician for corruption

RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilian police arrested on Thursday a high-ranking official in the administration of a now-imprisoned former governor of Rio de Janeiro, prosecutors said, the latest in a string of arrests for alleged political corruption in the state. In a statement, prosecutors said police arrested Regis Fichtner for receiving 1.5 million reais ($465,000) in bribes in exchange for favoring certain of business interests. They also took several local businessmen and engineers into custody. Fichtner, who could not immediately be reached for comment, was head secretary for Sérgio Cabral, who governed Rio from 2007 to 2014 and was arrested in 2016 on corruption charges.
