LONDON: A British explorer who went missing during a trip to Papua New Guinea has been evacuated from a remote patch of jungle but is now “feverish with suspected malaria”, his agent said on Friday.
“We can confirm that Benedict Allen has been evacuated by helicopter and is now safe in Port Moresby,” the capital, his agent, Jo Sarsby, said in a statement. “He is reported as feverish with suspected malaria. Benedict looks forward to being reunited with his family and friends but will need some time to get back to full health.” Allen, 57, had travelled to Papua New Guinea three weeks ago in an attempt to reach the Yaifo, a tribe believed to be one of the last on Earth to have had no contact with the outside world.
He took no mobile phone or GPS device with him. BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner, who has been on expeditions with Allen, said he had trekked “huge distances” to reach a remote airstrip.
Allen had been expected to return last weekend but he failed to make a flight home via Hong Kong. In a blog post on his website in September, Allen said: “Just like the good old days, I won´t be taking a sat phone, GPS or companion. Or anything else much.” “Because this is how I do my journeys of exploration.
