National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) as a component of Disaster Management – Confidence Building Measures (DM-CBM) under ‘Heart of Asia’ Initiative (Istanbul Process) has organised an international training course on disaster risk management for the Afghan disaster managers that will be on from February 10 to 14, 2015.
DM-CBM is an important component of implementation plan to enable further cooperation between the countries and build on capacities. NDMA is holding a six-day event in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) here.
The objective of training course is to impart training and to develop necessary skills to Afghan officials with regards to disaster risk reduction (DRR) mainstreaming in disaster preparedness, response, mitigation and media management for saving lives and properties of people from natural and human-induced disasters.
In the above context the inaugural ceremony was attended by NDMA Chairman Major General Asghar Nawaz, officials from the ministry of foreign affairs, Deputy Director of South Asia Division 2, JICA, Ambassador of Japan, and member DRR NDMA Ahmed Kamal besides other officials.
Director General of Afghan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), Dr Daim Kakar, along with members of his delegation is on a three-day official visit to Pakistan. Addressing the inaugural ceremony NDMA chairman extended warm welcome to Afghan delegation on their arrival in Pakistan and hoped that the training course would help to establish a common understanding among disaster and development practitioners of ANDMA to improve collaboration among various disciplines and integrate risk reduction considerations in development plans and decisions. The key modules during six days training course are based on subjects related to an overview of risk profile and disaster management (DM) system of both the countries, mainstreaming DRR into development planning processes such as water sector (irrigation and flood drainage), geo-technical sector (housing, highways, airports & multi story structures), health sectors, education sectors, gender and vulnerable groups in disaster management, climate risk management and adaptation, CBDRM, Contingency planning - UN perspective, fire safety/fighting emergency response management, and role of media in DRM.
