An ex-senator managed to escape from police custody while he was shifted to a police station after his bail was rejected by the court on Monday, the police sources said.
The Ganjmandi Police confirmed the report saying that a case was registered against ex-senator Abdul Maalik under fraud and cheating (FIR No. 900/2011) in November 2011 but the police could not arrest him nor he followed the case.
Meanwhile, the police obtained his warrant from the court of law to arrest him for further investigation but he got pre-arrest bail from the Rawalpindi Bench of the Punjab High Court, but the court after hearing the case rejected the interim bail of the ex-senator and the police arrested him as he came out of the courtroom. The police said that the police shifted him in a police vehicle and drove towards the Ganjmandi Police Station, but the police vehicle trapped in traffic at Mareer Chowk, the ex-senator jumped out of the vehicle and disappeared in the traffic mess.
The police claimed that the police personnel who were taking him to police station, ran after him but failed to nab him while the people who witnessed the scene disclosed that the police personnel didn't even came out of the police vehicle and kept watching his escape which indicated that the former senator escaped with connivance of the police.
The police authorities however, suspended the police officials responsible for the escape and ordered departmental inquiry. The authorities have sent police parties to hunt the ex-senator down.
