BDU defuses 385 IEDs so far this year

PESHAWAR: Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU) has successfully defused 385 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) which include 291 hand grenades, two suicide jackets, 23 timed IEDs, six remote control IEDs, 63 RPG-7 rocket, and two mortar shells in 2017.

The unit is playing key role against terrorism by working with Special Branch, Operations, Investigation and various miscellaneous duties assigned by the CPO from time to time, said BDU spokesperson on Sunday.

The Unit was raised in 1986 with Special Branch for VIP duties. Viewing the threat perception BDU was notified by the KP government in 2008 to meet the challenges of terrorism.

The unit was upgraded in 2016 to meet operational requirement of the province. The unit has led from the front to eliminate the menace of terrorism.

Since 2009 unit has successfully defused 3896, IEDs which included 15

 VBIEDs 56 suicide jackets, 11 suicide bombers, 343 remote control IEDs, 649 timed IEDs, 848 rockets, 1974 hand grenades, he added.

In 2017 so far the unit has successfully defused 385 IEDs which include 291 hand grenade two suicide jackets, 23 timed IEDs, six remote control IEDs, 63 RPG -7 rocket, and two mortar shells.

This effort has saved scores of innocent citizens and their property of billions rupees. In the line of duty, 15 officers of BDU were martyred while protecting the public.

With the offensive contributing role of the unit there is definite decline on terrorist incidents not only in the province.

The professional competence of the unit has been acknowledged by the federal government and the apex court many times by asking unit in assistance of many major terrorist incidents.

It is pertinent to mention here that there is no operational imbalance and the unit is fully equipped and operationally fit to meet any challenge of terrorism related to explosives and IEDs.

Repair and maintenance of equipment is recurring nature as it is used in the field round the clock to protect the public. —
