Lahore :Transportation of potentially hazardous materials requires extra care for ensuring safety to patrol officers, other road users as well as the general public.

Motorway Police, Central Zone, DIG Mirza Faran Baig said this while reviewing the SOP for dealing the vehicles carrying hazardous material on the national highways and motorways.

He said some of the hazardous materials being transported by road were petroleum products, alcohol acids, pesticides, ammonia gas, and nitrogen gas. The materials might either be poisonous, flammable or explosive in nature so transportation of such stuff demanded extra care, he added.

DIG Mirza Faran said the patrol officers should be extra vigilant while briefing or ticketing the drivers of vehicles loaded with hazardous substance. He asked them to park the patrolling vehicles at a safe distance and switch on the flashing lights.

He directed the officers to examine a vehicle loaded with potentially risky substance for leakage, smell or other unusual indication before interacting with the driver. He asked them to direct the driver/crew members to accompany them to a safe distance.

The patrol officers should not stop the vehicles loaded with hazardous substance in populated areas. Briefing/education be carried out near toll plazas at safe places. In case a violation is observed within the urban area, the officer concerned will communicate it to the next patrolling vehicle available in the open area, the DIG directed the officers.
