Sarwar’s exit

The resignation of Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar comes as no surprise. The only surprise is that it has taken this long for Sarwar to realise that he cannot survive in the style of politics practised by our leaders. How can a man who has learnt his politics in a truly democratic and egalitarian society fit here?
To be a successful governor in Pakistan, he had to be a yes-man. He made the mistake of doing something good for the ordinary public and refused to be a sycophant. He wanted to help the country by having local bodies elections and a clean governance system where land mafias and extortionists can be held accountable. That said, the fact is that whatever the governor has said at his press conference is true. Our leaders just do not bother about public opinion. They are insensitive to any good advice. Whatever Chaudhry Sarwar suggested for improving governance fell on deaf ears. No wonder he felt the futility of enjoying perks and privileges while not contributing anything towards the good of his country. This is the difference between our politicians and a man who is trained in cleaner politics. Sarwar’s resignation will send a clear message to all expatriate Pakistanis who aspire to come back and serve their country.
