Mangi asks NAB to withdraw its show cause notice

ISLAMABAD: A key member of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the Sharif family in the PanamaLeaks case requested his parent organisation to withdraw show cause notice against him. Irfan Naeem Mangi, who is representing the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) at the Panama JIT, was issued a show cause notice on the directive of a committee investigating illegal appointments in the top corruption watchdog body.

The apex court under the chairmanship of secretary establishment division Tahir Shahbaz formed this committee earlier this year. 

“Foregoing in view, it is requested that either the afore mentioned show cause notice be withdrawn or suspended till the completion of my present attachment period with the JIT as I am fully occupied with my current assignment,” Mangi wrote in his a two-page letter dispatched to the office of Chairman NAB Qamar Zaman. The notice was issued to Mangi days before the JIT started its work. 

"It is stated that I have been posted as director general operation at NAB Balochistan office in April 2017. During my posting at NAB, I proceeded on foreign study tour as per the mandatory requirement of national security and war course attended by me at National Defence University, Islamabad, after obtaining official permission from competent authorities on 24th April, 2017. During this tour, I was informed that the supreme court has approved me as member of JIT Panama case and NAB authorities vide a notification has attached my services with JIT accordingly with immediate effect, and thus on my return, I immediately joined my new assignment as member of the JIT in compliance to said notification. However, now I have been informed by NAB office telephonically that a show-cause notice has been issued to me under your signature requiring me to appear and show cause within 10 days regarding relevancy of my experience prior to joining NAB way back in 2004. Since I have not yet formally received the said show cause notice requested that a copy may be provided to me formally.

 It will not be out of place to mention here that I possessed about years of intensive experience, including inquiries and investigations prior to joining NAB in 2004. Further, I got first position in the Sindh Public Service Commission as well as federal public service commission examination is in 1992.

I have also been conferred with following three gold medals by Mehran Engineering University, Jamshoro, for my educational achievements,” reads the letter. The JIT accuseds NAB that the bureau was pressurising Mangi.
