Three accused denied bail in organ scam
LAHORE
A judicial magistrate on Wednesday rejected the bails applications of three accused in illegal organ transplant scam.
The court rejected the bails applications of accused Naheed Akter, Syed Aamir Raza and Safiya Bibi.
Previously, the court had denied bail to two Omani nationals, Munira Ahmed and Eesa Ali, accused of buying kidneys from the local agents.
According to details, Prof Dr Fawad, Dr Altamash and seven other suspects were arrested on charges of illegal transplantation of kidneys and sale of human organs in and outside the country. The suspects, during investigation, revealed that among the donors were a rickshaw driver, Amir and a woman, Roushni, who were promised to be paid Rs150,000 each.
Amir decided to sell his kidney to pay back his loan while Roushni could not be able to give her statement due to excessive bleeding, an official said, adding that the FIA arranged a professor from Mayo Hospital to look after her. The FIA officials said among the recipients were two Omani nationals who paid Rs4 million per head to the doctors for transplantation and added that they did not take donors and victims into custody since they were already trapped by the doctors.
Secretaries: The Lahore High Court Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah on Wednesday while hearing petition of woman lawyers seeking their recruitment according to 15 percent quota, summoned the secretaries of prosecution and S& G departments.
The chief justice ordered both the secretaries to appear on Thursday (today) to explain as to why jobs according to quota was not given to woman lawyers despite submitting an undertaking.
Petitioners' counsel said earlier on behalf of the provincial government that female lawyers would be given 15 percent quota but later refused to honour the commitment. He said the government had challenged this quota before the Supreme Court. He asserted that this government decision was based on mala fide and should be declared illegal. He also sought directions to recruit woman prosecutors according to the quota.
