IEP holds seminar on enchancing productivity at workplace

A seminar on enhancement of productivity and efficiency at workplace, was held here with a special reference to the Japanese modus operandi 5-S.

The seminar was organised by the Institution of Engineers, Pakistan, Rawalpindi-Islamabad Centre (IEP-RIC).

The 5-S means "sort", "set in order", "shine", "standardise", and "sustain" that was a methodology set by the Japanese years back to enhance production and efficiency at workplace. It underlined the importance of providing confidence, comfort and safety to the employees to achieve the desired results.

5-S was the secret of the success of Japan, said a veteran Engr. Ahmed Shamim who was the resource person at the seminar.

The seminar was an interactive sitting, participated by the members of engineering community, particularly youth. The other main speakers were IEP-RIC’s chairman Engr. Hafiz M. Ehsanul Haq Qazi, Vice Chairman Engr. Dr. Attaullah Shah and Secretary Engr. Shafiq Ahmed.

It was of part of ‘Continuing professional development programme’, being pursued by the IEP-RIC on regular basis for the motivation and capacity-building of young engineers, enabling them to deliver the best in the practical field.

The resource person, with help of slides explained the 5-S methodology, stating that it focused developing conducive, clean and healthy working environment to bring best possible results at the workplace. By implementing this formula, quality and production could be enhanced at the companies or government’s level, he added.

This methodology also helps in eliminating obstacles, reducing chances of being disturbed with unnecessary items, preventing accumulation of unnecessary items, removing all parts or tools that are not in use and segregate unwanted material from the workplace.

Engr. Ahmed Shamim was of the view that stipulated targets could be achieved by efficiently managing and cleaning workplace on daily basis. Each individual on the duty needed to take care of it and in this regard, proper time-management is also imperative, he added.  

He also spoke about the implementation of this methodology, stating that it could be applied to a wide variety of institutions and industries relating to engineering sector as well as healthcare, education, and government. He also explained house-keeping techniques that could make working environment more comfortable and conducive for enhanced productivity. 

Engr. Hafiz M. Ehsanul Haq Qazi announced on the occasion that the Center will soon hold number of other events  for moral-boosting and confidence-building of the engineers so that they could serve their country in best possible way and have a respectable place for themselves.

Pakistan, he added is blessed with rich natural and human resources that could be tapped with better planning and management. All segments of society should come forward to contribute for the progress and prosperity, he asserted.

Dr. Attaullah Shah who is also Vice Chancellor of City University Science and IT, Peshawar, shared his views about the importance of well-organized and well-disciplined workplace to achieve the desired growth-target.
