An amount worth Rs1.5 billion is required to make all tubewells functional in the capital city that is currently facing water shortage due to increasing temperature in the summer season.

According to a report of the Water Directorate of Capital Development Authority (CDA), 28 out of total 192 tubewells now cannot be made functional, which means these would not supply water anymore to the residents.

"Twenty five tubewells are being run by the private parties and 30 tubewells have been repaired and once again made functional. The repair work on 15 tubewells is currently underway and these would also be made functional in next couple of weeks," it said.

Chief Metropolitan Officer and Member Planning of CDA Asad Mehmood Kiyani said less amount of water is coming from Simli Dam and Khanpur Dam but still they are storing a limited amount of water with an aim to cope with the situation if the capital city receives less rains in May and June.

Deputy Mayor Azam Khan said when all the tubewells of the capital city would be made functional then the problem of water shortage would automatically be resolved to a considerable level.

"The residents must use the water judiciously otherwise the water crisis may intensify in the peak summer season. The clean drinking water is saved all over the world but here we use it carelessly and then face crisis," he said.
