Imran Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has written an open letter to the people of Karachi calling on them to raise their voices for the rights and basic amenities they have been deprived of by inefficient governments.
With strong words urging citizens of the metropolis to stand together for their due rights, the PTI chief’s letter comes as the party looks to build up support for its rally in Karachi on April 30
The cricketer-turned-politician’s letter read, “Karachi was once a city of pride for its residents; a city which had all basic amenities such as water, sanitation, a public transport system, electricity, and a working administration.
Where has all that gone? Who has taken all this away from us? Principally, the blame lies with the following: the governments of the past four decades; the politicisation of all civic institutions by those in power; and the silence of Karachi’s citizens.
We feel it is high time for all Karachiites to speak out for their own rights and those of our city. Karachi, the economic engine of the country, now stands depleted and we need answers.
Who is taking away our tax money? Why is it not being used prudently? Are we getting our due share from the taxes we pay?
We are virtually 10 percent of the country's population and it is time we raise our voice against the injustice being done with the citizens of this great city.
Therefore, I invite you, your organisation and its members to join us (PTI) in a peaceful walk on Sunday, April 30, at 3pm, that will begin from Mazar-e-Quaid, to demand the fulfilment of the rightful requirements of the citizens from all three tiers of the government – all of which have failed to deliver and have contributed to the breakdown and destruction of this city.
This is a march for Karachi's rights. It is above politics. It is to demand that the government pay attention to the miseries of the people. So please do join us to fight for your and the future generations’ rights!”
