Villagers from Lakki Marwat going to Punjab to eke out a living
Wheat harvesting season
LAKKI MARWAT: The villagers here have started preparations to set out for Punjab in a few days ahead of the advent of wheat harvesting season.
With temperature rising day by day, harvesting of wheat crop is likely to begin in the next week in Punjab. The residents living in rural areas in Lakki Marwat district go to Punjab for wheat harvesting season every year.
They are paid for their work. They also get wheat in turn for their work. Many poor residents from the underdeveloped southern districts of the militancy-hit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa prefer to get wheat for their labour and hard work. The wheat fulfills food requirements of the poor villagers for the entire year.
The land-holders in Punjab provide the labourers from Lakki Marwat with accommodation and food. “People living in rural areas of the district are poor and they lack livelihood opportunities,” said Liaqat, an activist of a humanitarian organisation. He said the villagers go to Punjab for the wheat harvesting season to eke out a living.
