DUBAI: The project ‘Book Corners in Coffee Shops’ has been launched across the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The project will provide a chance to visitors from different age groups and backgrounds to enjoy themselves reading while having a cup of coffee.

The UAE Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development has initiated the project in a number of malls across the country as part of its participation in the Month of Reading. The campaign ‘Month of Reading’ was also recently initiated by the UAE authorities and currently is underway to encourage reading among the residents of the country.

Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development Afra Al Sabry said that the book corner was only the beginning in a long list of coffee shops to be added to the project throughout the year. American coffee company and coffeehouse chain now included a dedicated book corner with a collection of books in both Arabic and English languages for ‘Book Corners in Coffee Shops’ project.

The ‘Book Corners in Coffee Shops’ project comes under the patronage of Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan. Sheikh Nahyan stressed the importance of establishing reading corners in coffee shops across the country, emphasising that this project acted as a cultural addition benefiting shopping-centre goers including men, women and children with different interests.

It is expected that the project would serve the community intellectually and culturally by creating a motivational atmosphere that facilitates reading.
