Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University has started PhD programmes in Basic and Clinical Medical Sciences and initiated process for registering students for the programmes.
The programmes are being initiated from January 2015, however, the draft of Rules & Regulations for PhD programme will be finally submitted to Higher Education Commission after approval from Board of Studies, Advanced Studies & Research Board and Syndicate.
Chairman Pathology Department and Dean Basic Medical Sciences at SZAB Medical University, PIMS, Professor Ashok Kumar Tanwani expressed this while talking to ‘The News’ on Saturday.
He added that recently a meeting of Task Force Committee for start of PhD programmes in Basic & Clinical Medical Sciences at SZAB Medical University was held under the Chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Professor Javed Akram.
Eminent Scholars including Professor Riaz Uddin Sheikh and Professor Mulazam Hussain Bokhari from Lahore, Major General (r) Professor Suhaib Ahmed, Brigadier Professor Dilshad Ahmed, Brigadier Professor Saleem Ahmed Khan, Professor Khalid Hassan, Controller of Examination at SZABMU Professor Tanveer Khaliq, Registrar SZABMU Professor Amjad Choudhary, Dean Basic Medical Sciences at SZABMU Professor Ashok Kumar Tanwani, Hematologist Professor Hassan Abbas Zaheer, Chemical Pathologist Dr Haroon Khan and Additional Director Dr Ayesha Issani Majeed attended the meeting.
Professor Ashok mentioned the aims and objectives of the meeting including start of PhD programmes in Basic & Clinical Medical Sciences at SZAB Medical University.
“In the meeting, the draft of statues & regulations of M.Phil and PhD as per criteria of HEC, approved from Board of Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, collaboration with other institutions, Doctoral Programme Coordination Committee (DPCC), regular faculty, interim regular faculty and list of adjunct faculty, incentives to supervisors, non-PhD university faculty and visiting faculty discussed and approved unanimously with minor changes,” said Professor Ashok.
He said the vice chancellor informed the meeting that a centralise research laboratory and Center for Genetic Disease will be established in the premises of the university. Meanwhile clinics for genetic diseases will be started in existing setup immediately, he said.
Professor Ashok said that qualitative and quantitative based research projects in Basic & Clinical Medical Sciences would be started which would be beneficial for clinical outcome of patients as well.
He said that in the meeting, Ex-Director PhD program at King Edward Medical University Lahore Professor Mulazam Hussain gave presentation on Standards of PhD in different developed countries and HEC Criteria for PhD Programme in Pakistan.
He said Dr. Haroon Khan prepared a draft of statues & regulations of M.Phil & PhD in Basic Medical Sciences and Professor Hassan Abbas Zaheer prepared a course work details for PhD programme in Hematology. Lot of work related to PhD courses in different departments of SZABMU is in the process, said Professor Ashok. He added that soon the draft of Rules & Regulations for PhD program would be submitted to HEC for approval, however, the SZAB Medical University has started registering students for PhD programme at the Pathology Department.
