Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has pledged that his party would take more steps for empowerment of women in Pakistan.

He also endorsed the United Nation’s 2030 agenda and its key ‘Sustainable Development Goals for the Women’.

In his message on the eve of International Women’s Day being observed across the world on Wednesday, Bilawal said the PPP had the distinct record in the world for electing the first-ever Muslim woman as prime minister of any Islamic country.

“She led all the weak segments of the society, especially the women, to launch concerted efforts for women empowerment and gender equality in Pakistan,” he said. “From the establishment of the First Women Bank, induction of women in the higher judiciary and separate police stations for women to distribution of land among women peasants, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto took every possible effort to promote women into the national mainstream as equal partners in progress.”

The PPP chairman said his government launched the Benazir Income Support Programme after coming into power in 2008. “The BISP has been lauded worldwide by international forums.”

He said the PPP had established a Women Development Department in Sindh and awarded party tickets to women, who defeated their powerful and influential rivals.

Bilawal said he believed that every Pakistani girl had the potential to become Benazir Bhutto if provided opportunities. “The PPP will continue its struggle to achieve gender equality and empowerment for every Pakistani girl and ensure inclusive quality education and health facilities for them.”

He said the PPP had enacted several legislations for protection of women against any exploitation and perpetual atrocities. “The PPP will bring in more legislation for the cause of women and their empowerment.”
