Three policemen, including a traffic constable, were killed in Karachi on Saturday.
In Lyari, two policemen were killed in an attack on a check post in Musa Lane.
Police said four gangsters fired gunshots at a Madadgar 15 check post, killing constables Saeed Akbar, 40, and Niaz Hussain, 42.
Both policemen suffered multiple bullet wounds and died on the way to a hospital.
Akbar was posted at the Baghdadi police station and Hussain was a former army soldier recently recruited by the police department.
Acting SP Lyari Aftab Nizamani told The News that the attackers had used 9mm and .30 pistols.
“The attack was sudden and the two policemen didn’t get time to respond,” he added.
The official suspected that the members of the Uzair Jan Baloch gang could be responsible for the attack.
He added that witnesses had identified the assailants.
“We have found clues and witnesses have also given us some names but we won’t disclose them now,” he said. “We are conducting raids to arrest the killers.”

Traffic cop killed
A traffic police constable was gunned down near the Saturday Bazaar at Malir Halt near Model Colony.
Javed Iqbal, 38, was shot in the chest by two men riding a motorcycle.
He was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where doctors pronounced him dead.
DSP Baqar Rind said Iqbal was posted at the Model Colony traffic section.
DIG Traffic Karachi Dr Amir Shaikh said the murder policeman was on duty and in uniform at the time of the attack.
He added that it was yet to be ascertained if the constable was carrying an official or personal weapon or not.
Recently, police high ups had decided to allow traffic cops to carry private weapons for their protection in the wake of repeated attacks on policemen.
Each traffic section in the city is allowed to have two police personnel in regular uniforms carrying sub-machine guns.
A police spokesperson said following the three murders, the number of cops who had fallen in the line of duty in Karachi this year had reached 14.
Last year, 143 cops including senior officials, most notably SSP Mohammad Aslam Chaudhry, were killed in the city.

Hall manager slain
The manager of a wedding hall was shot dead in Korangi No 5½.
Police said Iqbal Mehdi, 55, was standing outside the Gulab Wedding Hall where he worked as its manager when some people shot him multiple times.
Zaman Town SHO Shaukat Awan said Mehdi’s cell phone was missing and not responding to calls. Besides, he only had a 100-rupee note in his pocket, suggesting that he could have been killed while resisting a robbery.
However, the officer said Mehdi was a member of the Shia community and the possibility of the murder being sectarian in nature could not be ruled out.
