An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Wednesday extended the remand period of five members of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) till January 17.
The accused – Abdul Jaleel, Muhammad Imran, Gul Zaman, Salman Khan and Najamuddin alias Najeeb – were arrested after a police encounter in Agra Taj Colony on December 30, 2014. Cases of attempted murder, possession of explosive materials and illegal weapons were lodge against them at the Kalri police station.
The case IO put forward a request to extend their physical remand for further interrogation which was granted.

Extortionist jailed
An extortionist was sentenced to 15 years in jail by an ATC. The judge observed that the convict, Muhmmad Ibrahim, had tried to extort Rs1 million from a trader, Muhammad Rafique, threatening him of dire consequences if the payment was refused.
As the prosecution successfully proved charges against the accused, the judge deemed him liable for 15 years in prison; five years for extortion, five years for possession of illegal weapons and another five for threatening a person, which falls under terrorist activities.
For the latter, Ibrahim was tried under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997. The cases against him had been registered at the SITE-A police station.
The judge also imposed a fine of Rs150,000 which, if not paid, would add another 18 months to Ibrahim’s jail term. The court clarified that the accused had no prior criminal background and was the head of his family, which was why he had been awarded a lenient sentence.
