MQM leaders detained under MPO

KARACHI: On the request of Sindh Police Department, the Government of Sindh has issued an order of Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance. In this regard, a notification was also issued.

As per the notification, "On August 22, 2016 the supporters of MQM-A during telephonic address of Altaf Hussain outside the Karachi Press Club, chanted slogans against Pakistan and attacked a private television channel.

"On Saturday i.e. October-22, 2016, Dr Hassan Zafar along with other leaders of MQM-A London Committee again started gathering outside the Karachi Press Club to address a press conference. It has been stated by DIG South Karachi that the activities of Dr Hassan Zafar are prejudicial to public peace and order. He has, therefore, requested for issuance of detention order under MPO-1960 for a period of 30 days in respect of the above activist."

According to the notification, Shakeel Ahmed Mangnejo, Secretary, Home Department, Government of Sindh, was satisfied with the report of commissioner, Karachi Division, and DIG South Karachi and in exercise of the powers vested in him under
 Section 3(I) of the West Pakistan Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960, ordered the detention of Dr Hassan Zafar alias Arif for a period of 30 days with immediate effect. He shall be confined in Central Prison, Karachi.

Moreover, under the same ordinance of MPO-1960, two other leaders of MQM-A, Amjad Ullah Khan and Kanwar Khalid Younis Ali, were detained for 30 days at the Central Prison, Karachi.
