Public holidays declared on October 11, 12

The Sindh Home Department has allowed the use of loudspeakers in the province for the religious congregations in connection with the sacred days of Muharram, according to a notification issued on Friday.

In this regard, the Sindh chief minister has granted the permission for use of loudspeakers in the province for the specific purpose of majalis during Muharram-ul-Haram.

In this regard, the circular, issued by the Sindh Home Department, was given to the Sindh police inspector general, the Karachi divisional commissioners, the additional IG Police in Karachi, all Sindh Police DIGs and the deputy commissioners posted in the province.

The notification said the use of loudspeakers during the majalis was subjected to observance of all terms and conditions for the use of loudspeakers.

The notification, however, has no separate or explicit mention of allowing use of loudspeakers during processions related to Muharram. The Shia scholars have demanded that use of loudspeakers should also be allowed during Muharram processions, saying that it was essential to control, regulate and ensure discipline among large number of mourners participating in the processions.

In the previous year too, the then Sindh CM Qaim Ali Shah had allowed use of loudspeakers for congregations of Muharram-ul-Haram, following his meeting with Shia scholars and leaders.
