Peace day

By our correspondents
September 27, 2016

International Peace Day was observed on September 21. In light of recent events, where the whole world has become a target of terrorism, celebrating a ‘peace day’ seems quite ludicrous. Xenophobia is steadily gaining grounds across the globe. ‘Suicide bombers’ and ‘terrorism’ have become the buzz words of the 21st century. Countries are sealing borders, building walls, and installing gates to protect themselves from external threats. Daesh, Al-Qaeda, Taliban, and Boko Haram have created ripples in global peace. The plight of hundreds of thousands of Syrians endorses the havoc created by the ongoing war in the region. Likewise, Afghanistan, Iraq, Kashmir, and Palestine are no exceptions to the atrocities of wars.

UNGA’s 71st session followed World Peace Day. Think-tanks from around the world came together and brainstormed the issue of the refugees. They must devise ways and means to promote peace, progress and prosperity in the world. It is time we did something constructive for the promotion of peace rather than giving formal speeches at such occasions.
