This refers to the editorial, ‘The unlettered scholars’ (Sep 20) by M Zeb Khan. The writer has correctly described the role of elders or Malaks of Pakhtun areas, in particular Fata, as scholars of context as against scholars of text. Although these elders are not formally educated, due to their extensive knowledge about and immense credibility in the area, they play a vital role in resolving local disputes. The writer has correctly argued that this influence of the locals should be kept in mind while developing political and social reforms in the area.
For instance, due to militancy in Fata, it is generally perceived that the special autonomous status of Fata should be done away with through political and social reform. It is necessary that the scholars of context – the local elders of Malaks – are brought on board to successfully carry out these reforms. The only concern is whether there are enough scholars of context left alive by militancy and violence to carry out this job. that the truth is that whenever a new order is formed, the first thing that militants do is eliminate the leaders and elite of the old order.
