No classes today as govt varsities strike over curtailed role

Unhappy with the increasing government interference in their affairs through a disputed law, the government-run universities will go on a strike across Sindh today.

The call for the strike was given by the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (Fapuasa) on Tuesday.

The Sindh chapter president of the federation, Dr Mir Shahnawaz Talpur, said classes and other academic activities would remain suspended during the protest. 

He mentioned that the strike was called to register protest over amendments t to the disputed Sindh Universities Law 2013. 

Talpur said teachers and employees were unhappy with direct promotions and transfers that were taking place without being brought before the selection board. He added that all associations had demanded of the provincial government to withdraw all transfers and promotions.

The general secretary of Fapuasa’s Sindh chapter, Dr Shakeel Farooqi, claimed that besides the disagreement over the law, the teachers’ community was also not happy with the appointment of of retired persons to important positions at the public-sector universities in the province.
