University rankings
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016 has revealed that no Pakistani university could find a place among the top 500 world universities. Pakistan produces about 445,000 university graduates and 10,000 computer science graduates annually. A number of institutions of higher learning are active in the country, but the HEC recognises 177 institutions. .
Only two Pakistani universities could make it among the world’s top 800 universities. We need to invest more in research and innovation. Even if three Pakistani institutions had found a place in the top 100, it would not have automatically meant a huge improvement in the use of education, expertise, intelligence or research in the life of the nation as a whole. More attention should be given to ensuring the quality of education provided at all levels.
