A victory for principles

Zohran Mamdani is on his way to becoming the first Muslim mayor of New York City. Despite facing pressure from pro-Israel lobbying groups due to his open support for the Palestinian cause, he has continued to stand firm on his principles. Political scholars have long discussed how lobbying groups can influence American politics, yet Mamdani’s growing popularity shows that voters can and do look beyond such pressures. Throughout his campaign, Mamdani was repeatedly questioned about his views on Israel on live television, but the people of New York chose him over establishment figures like Andrew Cuomo.

His promises — like free public transportation, affordable housing, and economic fairness — resonated with ordinary citizens. The key takeaway is clear: democracy in the

US remains strong. No matter how powerful moneyed interests or lobbying groups may be, the ultimate power rests with the people and their right to choose leaders who represent their values.
