Traffic police crackdown leads to surge in driving licence applications

Following the special campaign launched by the traffic police against citizens driving without valid licences, there has been a significant increase in the number of people visiting driving licence branches.

Compared to the first 21 days of the previous month, 27,000 more driving licences were issued during the same period this month. Deputy Inspector General of Police (Training & Licences), Iqbal Dara informed this reporter that the trend of obtaining driving licences had been notably low last year. However, in mid-December, on his recommendation, the Sindh government initiated strict action against unlicensed drivers. As a result, driving licence branches have seen a surge in visitors, with the number of new licences issued doubling compared to the previous period.

According to Iqbal Dara, between December 1 and December 21, 2024, a total of 24,111 learner’s or new driving licences were issued, 7,384 permanent licences were made, and 9,552 licences were renewed — bringing the total to 41,047 licences in 21 days. Comparatively, from January 1 to January 21, 2025, 44,845 learner’s licences, 9,887 permanent licences, and 13,218 license renewals were recorded, totaling 68,950 licences in 21 days. This indicates a significant increase of 26,903 licences during the same time frame.

Dara also highlighted that citizens can conveniently apply for learner’s licences or renew existing ones online from their homes. Online applications allow fees to be paid digitally, and the licences are delivered directly to applicants’ homes, making the process both efficient and user-friendly.
