Justice Mansoor recommended as LHC CJ

JCP names JusticeIjaz SC judge

ISLAMABAD: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on Monday recommended the Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Ijazul Ahsan as a judge of the Supreme Court and senior-most judge Justice Mansoor Ali Shah as the LHC Chief Justice.

A meeting of the Judicial Commission was held here at the Supreme Court with Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali in the chair. The meeting was also attended by four senior judges of the apex court, a representative of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and others.

The sources said that Chief Justice Sindh High Court (SHC) Sajjad Ali Shah had recommended seven names to the JCP for appointments in the provincial high court, including District and Sessions Judge Rasheed Ahmed Soomro, advocates Arshed Hussain Khan, Masood Khan, Saleem Jessar, Abdul Hamid Barakzai, Hamayoon Khan and Sarfaraz Akhund.

The Judicial Commission, however, recommended the names of Rasheed Ahmed Soomro, advocates Arshed Hussain Khan, Saleem Jessar and Hamayoon Khan for additional judges of the SHC.

Meanwhile, the sources revealed that a five-member committee had been formed under the chair of senior-most judge of the apex court Justice Mian Saqib Nisar in order to give its recommendations on amendments to the JCP’s Rules 2010.

Other members of the committee include Attorney General for Pakistan Aushtar Ausaf Ali, Pakistan Bar Council’s representative Muhammad Yasin Azad, Punjab Bar Council representative Javed Hashmi and former judge of the apex court Justice Javed Iqbal.

The Judicial Commission was constituted under the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. The commission will send the recommended names to the Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment for approval.The parliamentary committee has the authority to approve or disapprove the names of judges.
