The recent expose by Nepra into the brazen manipulation of electricity bills is a chilling indictment of a system that has, for far too long, prioritized corporate profits over the welfare of its citizens. That millions of consumers across Pakistan were subjected to inflated charges is a national disgrace. Nepra, as the purported guardian of the power sector, has failed spectacularly in its duty. Their belated response to this crisis is akin to locking the stable door after the horse has bolted. The manipulation of billing cycles, the misclassification of consumers, and the rampant use of estimated readings are not anomalies but systemic issues.
To address this crisis effectively, a comprehensive overhaul of the power sector is imperative. We demand that Nepra impose the strictest penalties on the DISCOs and KE for their egregious misconduct. Those responsible for this financial plunder must be held accountable. Furthermore, the regulator must establish a robust and transparent grievance mechanism to ensure that consumers have a voice and that their concerns are addressed promptly.
