RAWALPINDI/ LAHORE: Security agencies have picked up the former Adiala jail deputy superintendent on charges of abetting former prime minister Imran Khan, acting as a communication link between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder chairman and his associates, both inside and outside the prison.
According to jail sources, transferred Central Jail Rawalpindi deputy superintendent (Executive) Malik Mohammad Akram and two other officials have been taken to an undisclosed location for interrogation. The investigation focuses on his alleged role in facilitating communication between Imran Khan and his supporters, including political figures, retired officials and others holding sensitive positions.
Sources claim that Akram provided Imran with a mobile phone, enabling him to maintain his contact with national and international allies and receive confidential information regarding government actions against him. “Akram was a key figure in the connection between Imran Khan and his network,” a source disclosed, adding that security agencies have informed the Inspector General (IG) of Prisons about Akram’s unlawful activities.
Following his arrest, Akram has been removed from his position, and the jail administration has reportedly initiated a departmental inquiry into the matter.
It has also been revealed that a former provincial assembly member (MPA) from Rawalpindi, affiliated with PTI, had referred Akram to the former prime minister for assistance.
The arrest has sparked widespread attention, given the high-profile nature of the case and ongoing political tensions surrounding the jailed PTI leader.
The investigation is going on, with more details expected to emerge in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the Prisons Department inspector general clarified that no arrests were from the jail premises.
He added Akram had been serving as an OSD for the past two months. When The News asked the IG Prisons why Akram was made OSD, he refused to talk about it.
Akram was removed from his post on June 20, while Deputy Superintendent Judicial Tahir Siddique Shah replaced him as security supervisor of PTI founder Imran Khan.
The Punjab Home Department (prison section), through a notification, had removed Muhammad Akram, directing him to leave the charge and report to the Prisons Department, Lahore.
