Kanju, four guards sent on judicial remand

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court Judge Rai Ayub Khan Marth Friday sent Mustafa Kanju, son of former Minister of Foreign Affairs Siddique Kanju and his four guards, to jail on 14-day judicial remand, accused of killing a 17-year-old orphan boy and injuring another.
The prime accused Mustafa Kanju and his guards, including Ikramullah, Asif, Saad and Sadiq were produced before the court of ATC judge. The police did not seek further remand of said accused pleading that it had completed investigation. The court after hearing police sent all the accused to jail on 14 days judicial remand, directing police to produce them again by May 7 and submit challan of the case.
Previously, police had informed the court that they had recovered a Kalashnikov from accused party’s possession. However, Kanju’s counsel submitted to the court that Kanju’s guard and the guard of his rival party opened fire on each other, as a result of which, Zain was killed. He said Kanju was innocent and implicated in forged case merely for humiliating and blackmailing although he had nothing to do with the killing of Zain.
Kanju was arrested after a case was registered against him under 7-ATA and Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code. He was accused of killing Zain, a 16-year-old orphan, and injuring Hussain, 18. On Wednesday, Kanju was going somewhere on his car bearing number plate LWK-77. As he reached in Street No 04 of Cavalry Ground, his car collided with another car coming from other side.
Following the accident, Kanju and his guards scuffled with the driver of other car. Kanju got furious and resorted to indiscriminate firing. As a result, Zain, 17, a resident of Street 11 of Cavalry Ground and his friend Husnain fell victim to the firing.
