Shaping the future
This letter refers to the article ‘Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow’ (May 27, 2024) by Amanat Ali Chaudhry. The upcoming Summit of the Future (SOTF) at the United Nations presents a critical juncture for international cooperation. This historic event, scheduled for September 2024, aims to forge a Pact for the Future – a roadmap to address pressing global challenges. One of the most pressing concerns is mobilizing adequate financial resources. Over 100 developing nations, including Pakistan, face crippling liquidity issues. To achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate targets, significant investments are crucial. Pakistan’s proposal outlines a multi-pronged approach, urging increased aid commitments, reallocation of unused funds and a substantial boost to climate finance.
This fight for financial justice extends beyond simply securing funds. Pakistan, alongside the Group of 77 (developing countries), is calling for a complete overhaul of the international financial architecture, reflecting a desire for a fairer global economic playing field. UN reform itself is another crucial battleground. Pakistan, along with the Uniting for Consensus group, opposes simply adding more permanent members to the UN Security Council (UNSC). Instead, they argue for a consensus-based reform that prioritizes greater representation and accountability for the UNSC.
