Two suspected robbers were killed by an enraged crowd in the North Nazimabad area of District Central on Friday.
It was reported that two robbers were caught by people when they were attempting to mug a person. After getting hold of them, the angry crowd severely beat them up, as a result of which one of the suspects died on the spot and the other succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.
When the incident came into notice of law enforcers, they reached the scene and took the robbers into custody and shifted them to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The suspects were identified as Ataullah and Abdullah. Police said they were checking the criminal record of the suspects as they suspected that they had previously been arrested. Further investigations are under way.
Protest
Relatives of two suspected robbers who were killed on Thursday night in an alleged police encounter within the Taimuria police station’s limits staged a protest on Friday and claimed that their loved ones were killed by police in a fake encounter.
Their families put the bodies on the road in front of the deputy commissioner's office in District Central, leading to the closure of both tracks. A large contingent of police also arrived at the scene.
The protesters said police had killed their two relatives in a fake encounter and demanded a transparent inquiry into the incident. Meanwhile, police maintained that both the deceased men were habitual street criminals. Both the suspects were involved in criminal activities, District Central SSP Zeeshan Siddiqui said, adding that the criminal record of the two men, Faisal and Naseer, was available with the police.
Police said cases were registered against both the suspects at multiple police stations. They added that Naseer was booked in five cases that did not have the anti-terrorism law included and terrorism-related cases had also been registered against him at the Azizabad police station.
The other suspect, Faisal, was booked in cases registered at the Taimuria police station. Police said Faisal was involved in a case of robbing a journalist’s family. The mobile phones recovered from Faisal’s possession were stolen from the jurisdiction of the Taimuria police station, police said. Cases regarding the police encounter and recovery of weapons have also been registered against the suspects.
