Man jailed for 21 years in illicit weapons, explosives case

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Thursday awarded 21 years imprisonment to a man for possessing an unlicensed weapon and explosive materials.
The judge in his verdict noted that the prosecution had been able to successfully prove the charges levelled against convict, Tanveer alias Jamboo; he would face 14 years for possession of unlicensed weapons and six years for possessing explosive materials; the court also imposed a fine of Rs75,000.
A case against the convict was registered last year after his arrest by personnel of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).
Steel Mill corruption cases
Administrative judge of an accountability court (AC), Muhammad Saad Qureshi, fixed April 16 to hear the corruption cases filed against chairman Pakistan Steel Mill, Moeen Aftab Shaikh.
Shaikh and 63 others were indicted for two references pertaining to charges of causing a loss of millions of rupees to the national exchequer and awarding canteen contracts in violation of rules and regulations, by AC judge Munawar Sultana. He had denied the charges and pleaded not guilty, however, four female accused, Sana Ubaid, Fatima Zafar, Shaheen Zafar and Zubaid Begum had acknowledged having committed the crimes.
The four accused had prayed to court to permit them to bargain and pay back the alleged looted amount to the NAB authorities.
SESSI corruption reference
AC headed by judge Ameena Nazir Ansari fixed July 26 to hear a corruption reference against chief medical officer of the Sindh Employees Social Security Institution (SESSI), Javed Ahmed Rajput.
He was alleged to have approved a tender (granted a contract) in violation of rules and regulations. A reference against the accused was filed before the AC concerned in 2015; he was, however, granted bail in the case.
