Seminar on persons with disabilities held

National Council of Social Welfare organised a national seminar titled ‘the Persons with Disabilities and our Social Responsibilities’ in connection with celebration of International White Cane Day here on Wednesday, says a press release. 

National Council of Social Welfare Chairman Dr. Nadeem Shafiq Malik chaired the seminar while Abia Akram, a prominent social worker was the chief guest. Representatives of civil society, NGOs, and intellectuals, officials of different departments of Capital Administration & Development Division (CADD), other stakeholders and large number of students attended the seminar. Various lectures were given on the subject as well as practical demonstration of white cane was given for awareness of the participants.

Addressing the participants, Dr. Nadeem Shafiq Malik said that Pakistani disables are playing positive role in the development of Pakistan in every field. “It is our responsibility to empower persons with disabilities as they can become effective contributing members of the society,” he added. 

He maintained that recent years have witnessed emergence of international movements for the empowerment of persons with disabilities through a member of international conventions and agreements, which make Government of Pakistan a partner in the global movement for the betterment of this important segment of society. It is our social responsibilities to provide a comprehensive range of facilities for persons with disabilities from pre-natal care through education, vocational training, employment, use of information technology, assistive technology through outreach programme and support during adult life through self employment, he added.
