This refers to the letter, ‘Field Marshal Raheel Sharif’ (February 4) by Hameed Akhtar Niazi. Apart from his decision to not seek another extension to his office, Gen Raheel Sharif has done a great job by restoring the distorted image of the army left by Gen (r) Musharraf, and left untouched by his successor, Gen (r) Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.
Gen Raheel dexterously managed to repair the breach of trust between the people and the army. Let history mark this as no small achievement. Field marshal or no field marshal, Gen Raheel deserves at least a memorable farewell when he hangs up his boots. I would like to add that the nation wants Gen Raheel to be around at least till the end of Operation Zarb-e-Azb.

This refers to the letter, ‘Field Marshal Raheel Sharif’ (February 04) by Hameed Akhtar Niazi. The writer has made a premature proposal. Gen Raheel Sharif made two promises to the nation – eradication of terrorism and ruthless accountability. While terrorism has been contained to a great extent, though not totally eliminated, the much-touted crackdown on white collar crimes has not materialised.
Corruption is the number one problem we are facing, more serious than terrorism. If corruption is tackled and accountability enforced, terrorism will automatically disappear.
